Akterek Hunting Grounds
“Akterek” spans 40,698 hectares and is located in the northwestern part of the Zhambyl district in the Almaty region. It is a completely mountainous hunting ground, with its highest points being Konyr Tobe (2,900 m) and Yrgaity (2,440 m). The eastern part borders the Karakastek hunting grounds, while the southwestern part borders the Zhambyl region. Key gorges include the Yrgaity Gorge, through which the river of the same name flows, and the Kurgoyan Gorge. “Akterek” is located 140 km from Almaty, accessible via a modern paved road. Situated on the northeastern slope of the Zhetyzhol ridge, a northwestern spur of the Ili Alatau, Akterek shares a similar species diversity with Karakastek. Additionally, it is home to the northernmost population of Tien Shan argali and Central Asian ibex.
